This should be so easy for any candidate, not just the ideal candidate, to hit out of the park. First of all, I would remind voters that the "do-nothing" Congress has done as much as is possible with the obstructionist Administration at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. But I would also say that I would move the budget agenda from "pay-go" rules (Pelosi's ill-conceived 2006 campaign pledge) to a full scale reform of federal budgeting. I would explain to the voters the importance of greater federal investment in infrastructure (roads, bridges, hospitals, water systems etc.) and the importance of accounting for it properly-- using capital budgeting. Then I would turn to Gerlach. Do you support the reforms necessary to make a dent in our multi-trillion-dollar deficit in infrastructure? If so, show me any evidence of your past or current leadership on the issue.I have this question for my potential opponents,” [Gerlach] said. “What will you do differently than Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ do-nothing Congress?”

Gerlach's Softball Challenge: Dems Should Hit It Out of the Park
Here's the latest from Gerlach. I guess he's trying to channel the Governator's "girly man" challenge:

Not enough room or time to elaborate, but suffice it to say that I hope someone can hit this softball out of the park. Thirty years of deregulation and credit expansion are coming home to roost and its going to be quite a mess to clean up. More than just strong policy positions will be necessary from ideal for 6th (just found your site and haven't seen your full positions). What is necessary is to do what the republicans have done over that time and put this into language that average Americans can understand, and pull independents and Republicans over. Our infrastructure is a mess, and spending on it will boost the economy. You can't just say you are a fiscal conservative, you've got to explain what that means, as you said. The public has been tricked by lines like "its your money and I want to send some back to you". W and Gerlach do not want auditors for Iraq to make sure they are "fiscally responsible". They don't want auditors for the defense department to make sure they are "fiscally responsible". Paulson (and Gerlach as he goes along as their puppy) wanted to put tax loss carryforwards in the simulas package for C, JPM and all the other I'banks to help them out with their losses and balance sheets which are a mess. However, bonuses. were not reduced at these banks. Why should my tax dollars subsidize wall street bonuses. fiscally responsible means you care about every dollar that comes in and goes out and make sure they are investments in our country's futre. Hope to come back to this
The sound of our violent agreement is deafening. "Fiscal conservative" is a feel good phrase without content. Our job is to demand our candidates specify what they mean.
I look forward to your elaborations on this and other themes.
